A brief introduction to Hayes Handpiece Repairs
Background
Based in California, Hayes has been operating and granting franchises for dental handpiece repair centers since 1995. Their network has grown to over 75 service centers in the U.S. and 4 in Canada (Edmonton, St-Catharines Ontario, Toronto and Montreal). The services of the repair center operated at their head office in California are available to all franchisees at preferential rates for repairs which can not be completed locally. As a result of their expanding network, they have been able to develop relationships with many of the major handpiece manufacturers, thus securing a reliable source of components, and access to proprietary repair equipment which they make available to their franchisees.
The Market
There are approximately 4100 practicing dentists in Quebec, and the market for dental handpiece repairs has been growing steadily in recent years due to stringent sterilization protocols which must be respected by all Dental practices. All handpieces must be sterilized after each use in an autoclave sterilizer. This exposes them to high heat and humidity, and causes the bearings in the handpiece to breakdown much faster than in the days when dentists simply wiped their handpieces with cold sterilizing solutions. The turbines of most high speed handpieces must be rebuilt or replaced at least once per year, more frequently if they are not properly lubricated between each use.
In Canada the major dental supply companies have been filling this need for the most part, but unfortunately for the dental community, not very well. Many companies do not perform the repairs themselves, but rather they send the instruments to the manufacturer for repair, or simply replace the complete turbine which can very costly to the doctor. Often dentists must wait many days for an estimate before the handpiece can be repaired. All this adds up to unacceptably long turnaround times, leaving the dentist to work with less handpieces than they require to be efficient (typically each dentist works with 4 or 5 handpieces). The Hayes concept is to provide very high quality guaranteed repairs at competive prices in a very short turnaround time (typically 72 hours).
Typical Franchise
The typical Hayes franchise consists of a geographically defined territory with approximately 1000 dentists. They are usually one or 2 person operations, many being operated out of the franchisee’s home.
Hayes Quebec
As mentioned earlier, the Quebec market consists of approximately 4100 practicing dentist, with about 2000 in the greater Montreal area (including the south shore, Laval and the lower Laurentians). Hayes Quebec currenlty has the rights to the 514 and 450 area codes which is almost double the typical territory. In operation since late 2007 Hayes Quebec has a well established base of clients and is ready for someone to step in and take it to the next level.
